History of the Guinness House
The Cottage and Gardens were originally developed by an English lady between the wars. Lady Oranmore and Browne the youngest daughter of Arthur Ernest Guinness of the Brewing dynasty acquired the cottage from the previous owner by appointment and purchased it immediately. Oonagh always remembered being surprised by the unusual dress of the seller “ The only clothing on her body was a straw hat”. Oonagh was the wife of Philip Kindersley and Dominick 4th Baron Oranmore and Browne whose children included Garech Browne and Tara Browne, tragically made famous by the Beatles “Day in the life of”.
She later transferred the Cottage to her Oldest sister the Hon Aileen Plunkett in the early 1950’s Aileen loved the cottage and the area much preferring the tranquility to her regular home at Luttrellstown Castle near Dublin. She would frequently cross the country in her Rolls Royce driven be her loyal Butler Gerry. Over the years many members of The Guinness family would visit with or without Aileen along with many renowned artists, musicians and actors. Aileen’s younger daughter Doon married The 6th Earl Granville a first cousin of The Queen. A Long list of Aristocracy continue to stay at the Cottage including The Duke of Kent, Earl of Erne, Duke of Abercorn and Knight of Glinn. Countess Granville became famously adept at hooking Lobsters from under rocks along the shore. She regularly travelled down from her home on an Island in the Outer Hebrides with her children the present owners. Their children the fourth generation follow the tradition of the whole family regularly meeting up at The Guinness House.
